HackingCongress is a new hub for projects at the intersection of civics & technology, fostering civic engagement and education, advancing government transparency, and supporting communication with government. ("Hacking" has a dual meaning in the computer world and in this case it is positive slang for creative programming.) The focus of this site is on projects related to the U.S. Congress and state-level legislatures.

Featured Project --- Filibusted.us: Check out who is stalling Senate action

A new site, Filibusted.us, sheds some new light into the filibustering process in the Senate. Filibusted.us was the well-deserved winner of Sunlight Foundation’s Apps for America contest and draws data from GovTrack.us to show which Members of Congress are obstructing progress.

Featured Project: Fifty States at Sunlight

Not sure how to get involved in the HackingCongress community? Start with Sunlight Foundation's Fifty States Project, whose goal is to build an open database of state legislation for all 50 states. Most of the states already have coders scraping their state legislature pages.

Welcome to HackingCongress

Welcome to HackingCongress! This site is just starting up as of March 14, 2009 --- the goal is to be a hub, or at least a links page, for the developer community surrounding the intersection of civics and technology especially (but not exclusively) as it relates to the U.S. Congress.

Your feedback on what to put here is most welcome! You can leave a comment to this post.

Or, create an account and start editing pages. Make sure your project is listed with a description you like, and add any other relevant projects, data sources, and APIs to the appropriate pages.
